Your pay back for the 1 ton diesel is ~ 180K miles, longer for a 3/4 ton. The Ford has recently had problems with the powerstroke. The GM is a little new for me as personally they have had 3 strike outs before this one. I went for the Cummins I want to be assured that it is going to pay back.

Sounds like the brushes finally wore out. At speed the springs could not hold them tight to the plates. I normally just take the altenator to the auto-electric shop and get it rebuilt. If the bearings were good you could have just added the brushes, but at that age it is good to rebuild the whole thing. This is problably what you did but have someone elses core. Your core sounds pretty good with near 200K.
